5 Lb. Brown

Biography

5Lb. Brown was created back in 1998 by bassist/vocalist Bill Gluckin and guitarist/vocalist Jason Foster. Jason's experimental hard rock band, The Rhythm Method, had just finished its 3 year run, and he was looking for a new project. He and Bill had been jamming together for several months, so the creation of the band was just a natural step. In the first two years, the band had multiple personnel changes, especially drummers. By late 1999, the band had become a trio by default, consisting of Gluckin, Foster, and drummer Tony Ryon. In 2000, the band released its first full length CD that year, Asnebumskit . The 60+ minute CD shows 5Lb. Brown's flavor at the time for various musical styles, and a stripped down attitude towards recording. The disc received small airplay on college radio stations all over the country. While 5Lb Brown prided itself a band without a genre, the sheer variety of the music on Asnebumskit was too much for many fans, and presented challenges for a band trying to gain its audience. 5Lb. Brown started playing many, many shows in the Boston and Providence, RI clubs, slowing gaining momentum and fans.

By the end of 2000, power-drummer Jeff DiBiase had replaced Ryon, and a new era had begun for the band. Jeff had spent almost 8 years pounding the drums for the infamous metal band Feces Pieces, which had several releases on Curve of the Earth records in the 1990's. Jeff's addition to the act was perfect timing, as the new songs coming from the band where much more aggressive in nature than those displayed on the rootsy Asnebumskit.

With a new sound and attitude, 5Lb. Brown found itself becoming more of an odd, hard rock band. There was a mixing of heavy riffs and pounding double bass drums with other musical styles. Because of this change, the band was gaining more fans, and continued to play a lot of shows all over the Northeast US. Jeff's energetic style of performing became a live show favorite. But the band also played live with many talented guest musicians. 5Lb Brown started to become known as a band to see live, as the shows where always different from previous performances. You just never knew what you would get.

In 2003, the band had entered The Bog studios in Brighton to begin its next release. A three song EP was completed and later scrapped in favor of an LP release with additional new material. The band was at its peak now, roaring on like a machine. It would not last however. By 2004, Bill Gluckin had moved on to better things, and left the band, effectively ending 5Lb. Brown for good.
